The Pultrusion Process
High strength, yet lightweight and easy to install, Fastec International’s pultruded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) shapes are a low-maintenance, attractive, and durable solution to applications where traditional building materials cannot meet the demands of the operation.
A manufacturing process that produces continuous lengths of FRP shapes with constant cross-sections, pultrusion pulls raw materials – a liquid resin compound (a mixture of resin, fillers, and special additives) and flexible textile reinforcing fibers (typically glass) – through a heated steel die with a continuous pulling device in order to form a final shape.
The process begins with long doffs of fiberglass roving, for longitudinal strength and improved tensile properties, which are then covered with fiberglass mat to improve transverse properties. The different rovings and mats utilized in the process are chosen uniquely for each project in order to improve the properties required for the final application. These reinforcements are pulled next through a resin bath, which saturates them with the resin mixture, and then pulled through the heated die to form the final, immutable shape.
